Okay, I admit it. I thought that oyster crackers were somehow made with oysters. I'm not sure how or why, but that is what you get.

Phew. I feel lighter now.

It turns out that they are called oyster crackers, because they were once used to add crunch to oyster stew, a popular dish from the 19th century in the northeastern United States. Although the association between the oyster stew and the crackers is gone, the name has stuck. The more I know, the better.
